Montrose Avenue Beach (Lawrence Avenue Soccer Fields Playground)While the Chicago Park District does not have a name for this playlot, it is easily seen when looking northward from Lawrence Avenue. Sitting roughly 100M from lake Michigan, it serves as an attractive destination for children and families enjoying the other outdoor options at Montrose Beach. Access The viaduct(s) under Lakeshore Drive in Uptown are a mangled mess of rusted rebar, ripped protective netting and tender as chalk concrete. While we have (thus far) navigated the route without loss of life or limb, former Uptown native Harrison Ford provides the best advise for safe advance (LINK). The city and state have announced a collaboration that will begin repairs of the Lawrence and Wilson Avenue bridges by Summer 2017. Until this is complete, be safe and avoid walking under the bridges. Montrose Beach Park, somewhat controversially, includes 9.25 acres of parking. While even his abundance of space is exhausted quickly on weekends during the summer, most days of the year you will find easy parking along Simonds Drive. Equipment
The play-space hosts four major pieces that lean heavily on the resurgent rope-based playground equipment. A merry-go-round like leviathan includes 4 individual spinners and rope walls. Despite Herculean effort, the entire apparatus spins very slowly. The swings include two baby seats and four standard swings along with a fairly large swinging disk element. The real champion of this equipment set is the large rope diamond that rewards with access to a short rope bridge and a slick slide. Finally, a large half circle stretches four rope walls up and out of the wood-chip play base, granting elevated views stretching out and over the lake.
